Maven: a masterclass in great online course design
Examples of stand-out online courses with ~96% completion rates
A question I get asked a lot is: where can I see some examples of great online learning experiences? My answer is always Maven.
This week, I was lucky enough to be a featured instructor as part of Maven's new marketplace launch.
Hosting a course with Maven has been a game-changing way for me to develop both as a course designer and a product manager.
The three most interesting things I’ve learned by delivering my Course Design Accelerator on Maven (so far!)
Teachers who teach every day struggle when it comes to teaching online.
Instructional designers who design courses everyday struggle when it comes to accessing & applying theories of teaching & learning to online or hyrbid course design.
Non-experts who want to generate an income from building great online courses have a vast array of platforms to choose from (Thinkific, Teachable, Podia etc), but lack the help they need to design their course content, activity & interactions - hence an average course completion rate of 3-6%.
This is where Maven is set apart. As a cohort-based platform which prioritises community, collaboration & application, Maven offers courses which are effective, engaging and energising (think completion rates of ~96%).
I’m spoiled for choice, but two of the best examples of great course design on Maven are:
The Restaurant Management Accelerator designed and hosted by Renee Guilbault: a masterclass in how to use project-based pedagogy for skills development online.
Measuring Development Team Performance designed and hosted by Laura Tacho: a stand-out example of a short, intensive, hands-on & high-impact online course.

Happy designing 👋
